Prof. Steven G. Louie Delivers the 6th Tamkang Clement and Carrie Chair Lecture

Tamkang University invited Prof. Steven G. Louie, an academic heavyweight in the field of condensed matter physics and materials science, to deliver the 6th Tamkang Clement and Carrie Chair Lecture. Prof. Louie has received countless awards and honors. In 2005, he was named an academician of the United States National Academy of Sciences; in 2008, he was conferred academician status in Academia Sinica, Republic of China; and in 2009, he was selected to become an academician of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Prof. Louie currently serves as a professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley and senior faculty scientist in the Materials Sciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He is also scientific director of the Theory of Nanostructured Materials Facility at the Molecular Foundry.

Prof. Louie's talk was held on the afternoon of March 25, 2019 at the Hsu Shou-Chlien International Conference Hall, Tamsui Campus, and explored the topic: The Fascinating Quantum World Atomically Thin 1D & 2D Materials: Symmetry, Interaction, and Topological Effects.

Close to 300 faculty members and students attended the talk, including those from the TKU Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry, Department of Math, the Bachelor's Program in Advanced Material Sciences, and the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering. In addition, the talk drew many renowned scholars in related fields, such as the Director of the National Taiwan University Center for Condensed Matter Sciences, Dr. Michitoshi Hayashi.
