A robot soccer team from Tamkang University (TKU) took home five gold, four silver and two bronze medals at the recent Fira RoboWorld Cup in South Korea. TKU announced that Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering professor and Director of the Intelligent Automation and Robotics Center Wong Ching-chang, along with assistant professors Cheng Chi-tai and Li Shih-an, led Team TKU in attending the recent 20th Federation of International Robot-soccer Association (FIRA) RoboWorld Cup in Daejeon, South Korea. They became the champions of robot soccer in the FIRA RoboSot League and the All Round Champion in the FIRA HuroCup. Since 2003, the team has already been champions 11 times in FIRA RoboSot, and has earned top honors in the game for the last 10 years. Additionally, from 2005 until now, the team has been named All Round Champion in the FIRA HuroCup eight times, TKU said. The mid-sized soccer robot developed by the TKU team can monitor and communicate with other robots using a Wi-Fi connection. During the game, humans do not control the robots remotely. This year, the TKU team upgraded with cameras, industrial computers and hardware circuits. Team TKU also improved the robot's soccer-playing strategy, which was the key to winning each game. In this RoboSot League, Team TKU also won two gold medals in the Avoidance Challenge and Open Creative Challenge categories, and one silver medal in the Localization Challenge category, TKU stated. In the HuroCup competition, humans are not at the controls during games. Each humanoid robot needs to have the ability to carry out actions using onboard cameras. Each humanoid robot is equipped with cameras, and industrial computers and a control circuit board allows it to move around smoothly. Team TKU optimized the mechanism of its 10th-generation humanoid robot so that it can be assembled faster than before. With those advantages, they received one gold medal in the Weight Lifting category, three silver medals in the Weight Lifting, Lift and Carry and Sprint categories and two bronze medals in the Basketball and Long Jump categories.
