On March 23, the TKU Graduate Institute of International Affairs and Strategic Studies held an international symposium at the Jiantan Youth Activity Center, Taipei City. The Symposium took the theme of “New Perspectives on Asia Pacific Security”, and attracted distinguished guests, such as the President of TKU, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang, the former Vice President of the Republic of China, Ms. Lu Xin-lian – both of whom provided opening remarks – and the Mainland Affairs Council Deputy Minister, Chang Hsien-yao, who delivered a special lecture. It was also attended by close to 30 local and overseas scholars, who together explored issues to do with security in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Director of the Graduate Institute of International Affairs and Strategic Studies, Dr. Wong Ming-hsien, explained that at present the situation in Asia is somewhat volatile. After President Obama came to power, the power dynamics of international affairs began to shift. In 2012, after over two years of continual drafting and revising, the Obama administration, on Jan 5, 2012, announced the New Evaluation of Security Strategies. The evaluation advocated the enhancement of America’s position as a global leader; a gradual shift involving a greater focus on Asia, with a view of Iran and China as major potential threats.

During the conference, Taiwan’s status in relation to Mainland China was also discussed.
