The Chung-ling Innovation Chemistry Competition Takes Place

Chemistry is something that is closely connected within our daily lives. Just by paying closer attention to the tiny details of the products we use or places we spend our time, there is an abundant amount of chemistry knowledge that can be absorbed. In order to give high school students a greater awareness of the chemistry in their environment, the “Chung-ling Innovation Chemistry Competition” was created. This marks the 10th year of the annual competition that took place on March 14th. This exciting event attracts students of every from all over Taiwan to compare and test their skills through an hour-long examination and 3 hours of scientific experiments. Dean of the College of Science, Wang-bo Cheng, stated, “We’ve invited students from all over the nation to encourage them by giving them an opportunity to test their chemistry knowledge, practical skills and applications. Their parents can also observe the usefulness of the knowledge of chemistry, which will actually have a positive impact on our community.” Director of the Department of Chemistry, Jyh-shing Lin, stated, “The Chung-ling Chemistry Innovation Competition is always a very exciting time of the year. The goal is to give students a deeper understanding of chemistry through hands on interaction.”

This year’s competition emphasized creativity and design. The event was divided into two parts: the first part was a written examination that tested students’ knowledge of concepts, theories and information; the second part involved competitive experimentation regarding chemical organic compounds and functional chemical properties, monounsaturated fat examination methods, the meaning of iodine compound color changes and solution reactions and titration skills.
