After the International Chemistry Fair took place in 2011, popular science books have continued to receive support and funding everywhere in Taiwan. What is the reason behind this recently increasing interest in popular science? Dean of the College of Science, Bo-cheng Wang, stated, “Even though students have the ability to enter the world of science on their own through the internet and instruction of their teachers, nothing impacts the youth more than having a personal experience with science. Now their eyes have been opened and they have a thirst for scientific knowledge.”

The International Chemistry Fair held in 2011 was organized to present the Science Nobel Prize and to create a cooperation of knowledge for chemistry from all over the world. Through this alliance of knowledge, participants were able to come in close contact with the different methods, ideas and understandings of chemistry on a global level. Because of this personal hands-on experience, after the event ended the groups that came together continued to work and grow. They even received funding and support from from 25 different scientific industries in Taiwan. In 2013 the governments from Taipei county, Gaoxiong and Hualian continue to work together in the promotion of these events and the circulation of popular science books.

The General Secretary and planner of these chemistry fairs in the countryside, Hsien-chang Kao, stated, “What we have emphasized in this scientific revolution contains 5 major parts: active studies, encouragement of cooperation, personalized curriculum, effective study methods and fair education. Also we have created the awareness that science is a part of everyone’s daily life. This makes the popular science books a great form of education for those living in the country areas. During these chemistry fairs, students are able to see, listen and touch the magic of science for themselves. For the last two years we have seen the impact it has had on the youth in every type of learning institute in Taiwan. These science fairs give the students a break from the usual mundane methods of study and stimulates their interest in education in a way that is fun and exciting. This month students were able to learn some of the problems and complications of the effects of food additives and preservatives, giving them a much deeper understanding of nutrition. Whether it’s a scientific magic show, or the explanation and analysis of the colors of plant life, science is helping Taiwanese youth to see things up close.”
