The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

The day before yesterday, Professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of the Intelligent Automation and Robotics Center, Ching-chang Wong, and Assistant Professors of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Chi-tai Cheng and Shih-an Li, lead the Intelligent Automation and Robotics Research Team to attend the 20th Annual 2015 Federation of International Robot-soccer Association world cup in Daejeon, Korea. The event included Robot Soccer, Huro Cup (Human shaped robots) and the All Around.

Since 2003 this team has had the honor of winning the robot soccer competition 10 times in the category of medium-sized robots, making this year the 11th victory for the prestigious research team. In addition, since 2003 the robotics research team has also won the human shaped robots division a total of 8 times. This exceptional team has not only brought recognition to the university, but honor to the country of Taiwan.

Ching-chang Wong expressed, “The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has one of the best academic programs in Korea. It has hosted international academic events for many years, including the Daejeon World Exhibition since 1993 and the 1st FIRA World Cup in 1996. Returning to Daejeon for the 20th year of the competition has significant meaning so the Korean government was more than happy to oblige.”

For the competition, the robots had to undergo various challenges in terms of modes of operation including remote control and wireless internet control. Each year, every team’s capabilities are raised along with the difficulty of the challenges. In recent years the newly added events include the Avoidance Challenge, Open Creative Challenge and the Localization Challenge. The competition also tested many other skills such as weightlifting, long jump basketball and more. The research team leader, Xiang-li Zhou, expressed, “Going overseas for a competition is really very stressful, but being able to bring home a prize is something we will all remember for a lifetime. I truly love our team.”
