Since the 90’s, the diet of young people in Taiwan has been significantly impacted by the western world. Now people on a traditional rice diet are becoming less and less. For this reason the government has began promoting the produce of Taiwan, aiming it for local consumers while embracing the concept of environmental waste reduction to help improve the environment through the “Dietary Education Policy.” The objective of the policy is to educate people on traditional Taiwanese cuisine. This month, Tamkang University has jumped on board with this program as the Office of General Affairs promotes the Taiwanese Rice Festival.

Every November the Taiwanese Rice Festival takes place as an encouragement for students and teachers to appreciate the abundant local produce. The event incorporates 20 business and restaurants that freely give out 200 discount coupons. Over 4000 coupons were already given away last week and they will be effective until Nov. 27. Event Organizer and member of the Office of Human Resources, Chia-mei Wang, explains, “This event was designed to let teachers and students see the value in our own produce. These local businesses have come together to showcase the delicious foods that are right under our noses.”

The coupon and raffle event continue to stimulate interest among students. First place raffle winner and first-year student of the Graduate Institute of Chinese Studies, Hai Lin, expressed, “I had no idea what the Rice Festival was until I found a raffle ticket and coupon. Now I come to find that it is truly an amazing and meaningful event.”
