Creating Jobs for the Visually Impaired

In order to create more opportunities for the visually impaired in the workforce, Tamkang University has teamed up with the Taipei City Government to create a ‘Visually Impaired Customer Service Team’. The customer service team is made up of 12 blind and visually impaired people who have received intensive training in phone-based customer service by the TKU Center of Resources for the Blind. As of the beginning of August, the twelve-strong team has officially entered the ranks of customer service representatives for the widely-used ‘1999 Citizen Hotline’. The team is responsible for providing customer service and answering enquiries related to workers’ rights.

To mark the start of this significant initiative, a press conference was held today (Thurs, Aug 9) at the Chueh Sheng International Conference Hall of Tamkang University’s Tamsui Campus. It featured speeches from the Mayor of Taipei, Dr. Hau Lung-pin, and the President of TKU, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang. It also involved a demonstration of the team's customer service skills and the leading-edge technology that the representatives will use to successfully carry out their job.
