Flipped Classrooms Come to TKU

On Nov. 6 an unveiling ceremony was held, presenting the Center for Learning and Teaching’s model classroom in room 307 of the Ching-sheng Building, which will now be utilized as a flipped classroom to give students practical skills. In attendance was Vice President of Academic Affairs, Huan-chao Keh, Vice President of Administration, Yi-jen Hu, Vice President of International Affairs, Wan-chin Tai, Director of General Affairs, Shiaw-shiaw Luo, Executive Director of the Center for Learning and Teaching, Hui-ling Pan, former Executive Director, Chia-cheng Yu and administrators of all levels. All of the walls of the classroom were white like a canvas as Associate Professor of the Department of Information and Library Science, Jui-fa Chen, show cased the model room.

Huan-chao Keh expressed, “The construction of a flipped classroom is directly related to our Spirit of Excellence education system. Not only did the Center for Learning and Teaching create a room, they also established our annual flipped classroom activity. Everyone is welcome to come and participate. In addition of the roles being reversed between student and teacher, flipped rooms will also teach students initiative and cooperation skills. The core element of the curriculum is interaction. Interaction skills will be developed between teacher and student and also among classmates.”

Executive Director Hui-ling Pan described the layout of the room while explaining its importance and letting the teachers and students get a feel of the experience. Jui-fa Chen presented a topic while showcasing the effective and versatile learning that the flipped classroom atmosphere provides, which includes tables, flat screen computers, cells phones, laptops and a large glass whiteboard for discussions.
