TKU's 63rd Anniversary Celebration

On November 9th, at 9 AM, Tamkang University’s 63rd anniversary celebration took place in the Shao-mo Memorial Gymnasium. The event was hosted by President Flora C.I. Chang and speeches were presented by members of the board of trustees, which included Yea-hong Chen, Ching Nan Chen, former President Yun-shan Lin and Horng-jinh Chang. Six distinguished individuals were awarded the 27th Golden Eagle Award for their excellent contributions to the university: Eric Y.T. Chuo, James Hsu, Szu-wei Yang, Shou Yiing Hsu, Jenn-hwa Yang and Chin-chang Wu. They were also awarded a certificate of appreciation for embodying the essence that founded TKU. Ching Nan Chen, the representative of the Global and International Alumni Association, ended the celebration with both inspiring and endearing words. In closing, the faculty and alumni came together in harmony to sing the alma mater.

President Flora C.I. Chang emphasized that she was especially grateful for the services of the entire school board. She mentioned that this university’s unceasing development and widespread public approval, is due to the collective effort of all 24,000 alumni. Afterwards the President laid out a detailed one-year projection of the university regarding academics, research and the Triple Objectives of Education. She applauded the successful results of the campus’ environmental protection policies that have gained praise and recognition from the public. An achievement noted by Cheers Magazine, listing TKU as the leader of 16 private institutes in regards of environmental protection.

The President analyzed that the Office of Academic Affairs has continually promoted the “Excellence of the Soul” to each student while the Office of General Affairs has guided the school into an Eco-friendly era. The university received rewards for “The Annual Enterprises Environmental Protection Award” as well as “Ministry of Education’s 2013 Friendly Campus Award” indicating this university’s blend of life values in combination with high quality academic education. President Flora C.I. Chang stated that this 63rd year of the university represents both quality and conduct. She emphasized that by making this the core ideology of education for students it will guide the spirit of the university itself. She wishes to utilize this spirit so that the students may harness it completely and later implement it into every corner of society.

The President also mentioned that the six individuals who received the “Golden Eagle Award” were from different colleges, but displayed the same unique principles of the university when it was established during the first and second wave of the institutes’ major development: simplicity, truthfulness, firmness and perseverance. They also made a great effort to promote the Three Circles and Five Disciplines of Education. In closing the president paid special tribute and gratification to all of the individuals that made donations and contributions of various technical resources that have allowed the sustainable development of Tamkang University, paving the road to a beautiful future.

Chin Nan Chen, the representative of the Global and International Alumni Association, gave thanks to the teacher’s for their diligent instruction in all subjects. He stated that since his graduation, he has been able to transform the hardships of work into fulfilling and beautiful accomplishments. He felt both honored and moved to see the faces of his teachers and other alumni for the 63rd anniversary of TKU. Afterwards the Global and International Alumni meeting took place, followed closely by the student alumni Homecoming event held in the Ching-sheng International Conference Hall.

In the midst of the 63rd Anniversary of TKU, the students also put forward the 11th “Omelets for Sweethearts” event. A romantic atmosphere was created while participants were able to dine on omelets and a multitude of other cuisines, filling their bellies and warming their hearts. The idea was to wrap the essence of love within the omelet and give it to an endearing student. The participants enjoyed a short film which was followed by an exciting performance of singing, dancing and magic. This year’s Omelets for Sweethearts event was so delicious that it will remain in the students’ hearts for years to come.

The Office of General Affairs arranged a 3 day orchid exhibit that has become a tradition at this university. From the 7th to the 9th, up to 40 different types of orchids could be observed from 20 different gardens from all over the world. The variety of orchids dazzled the observers as they peered closely at many rare orchids from Asia, Australia, South America and Taiwan. In many ways the beauty of the various orchids, symbolized the unique development of the students, staff and alumni at Tamkang University.

In step with this year’s anniversary celebration and the spectacular orchid exhibit, is also the championship games for the university’s basketball and volleyball teams. There will be a modern art display in the Fine Arts Center from November 8th to December 22nd. This year’s versatile and abundant activities are sure to display the physical, academic and innovative prowess of the school. Everyone is invited to participate in the excitement of TKU's celebration of development.
